 How It All Began...
The New York Snowmobile Coordinating Group emerged in 1975 from a melting pot of diverse groups with common goals.
The name was changed to the New York State Snowmobile Association in 1996. NYSSA is a volunteer effort of snowmobilers and organizations striving to improve the sport. The State of New York as well as many international sport and industry associations recognize NYSSA as the voice of New York snowmobilers. Our Mission
NYSSA seeks to preserve and improve snowmobiling in New York State.
NYSSA works toward improving trails, facilities and services for participants, and defends snowmobilers against discriminatory legislation. NYSSA works to protect landowners, review and watchdog the NYS Trail Fund and is constantly seeking additional Trail funding programs. NYSSA continually works to improve communications in every aspect of snowmobiling. NYSSA coordinates and provides leadership for New York State Snowmobile Clubs and Organizations in developing and implementing policies, strategies and action plans which foster the growth of safe snowmobiling. | |
Board of Directors
Each Director represents either a multi or single county district.
Each club or county association can nominate a candidate, then the clubs within the district elect the Director. Directors work with each club in their districts giving all snowmobilers a chance to be in touch with NYSSA at the local level. |

- NYSSA reports a total membership of 65,597 at the end of the 2007-08 season.
- January, 2008
- NYSSA engages the services of Whelan Media to assist with communications both within the organization and to the public.
- September 30, 2007
- NYSSA's Online Membership System is rolled out, making membership administration easier for both Clubs and the Association.
- September, 2007
- The Statewide Trail System grows to 10,285 miles of trail funded from the Snowmobile Trail Fund.
- July, 2007
- NYSSA initiates its Membership Discounts Program with six sponsors joining the initial program.
- April, 2007
- NYSSA initiates the NYSSA Online Magazine, another means of communication with its membership.
- 2007
- $1,042,000 in Recreation Trail Program Grants is awarded to NYSSA Member Clubs for the purchase of trail grooming and maintenance equipment.
- August 30, 2006
- The Snowmobiler's Rights and Responsibilities Act (S.3158B) is signed into law by Governor Pataki, increasing the dollar amount paid into the trail fund to $35 for NYSSA members, $90 for non-members. This increased revenue immediately and directly benefits NYSSA Clubs.
- December, 2005
- NYSSA Creates its Landowner Information Brochure to aid clubs in securing Landowner permission for their trails. The brochure describes the General Obligations Law and other protection offered to our Landowners.
- September, 2004
- NYS OPRHP releases the 2003 Snowmobile Owners Survey an Economic Impact Study placing the impact of New York's Snowmobile industry at $875 million annually.
- September, 2004
- The first issue of The New York Snowmobiler Magazine is delivered to NYSSA members. This four-color quality publication is produced at no cost to members.

- NYSSA engages the services of The Capitol Group, a professional lobbying firm.
- 2003-04
- The Statewide Trail System grows to 8968 miles.
- 2003
- Snowmobile registrations in New York State peak at 172,164 sleds.
- 1997
- The first NYSSA Website is published, making information available to snowmobilers world-wide.
- 1991
- The first Recreation Trail Program (formerly TEA-21) (in the amount of $16,000) is obtained for the purchase of two class B snow groomers for Tupper & Saranac Lake Snowmobile Clubs.

To continue NYSSA's success, we need the support of every snowmobiler and club in the state.
We have ambitious goals and we face critical issues. It's imperative that NYSSA remains a strong and active voice in Albany and a determined guardian of the Trails Fund for snowmobilers across the state. NYSSA is a valuable source of helpful information on everything from effective political contact to trail construction, from equipment maintenance techniques to new trail riding opportunities. |
