NYSSA ADK Trail Stewards Program June 3rd, 2012 in Speculator

The 2nd NYSSA Trail Stewards training program will be held on June 3rd in Speculator.  (Location still tbd)  This training is for all interested trail volunteers to become aware of what the DEC/APA regulations have on trail building & maintenance in the ADKs.  This intial training, being called Phase I or the program's complete training exercises, includes both classroom training as well as hands-on experiences in the field on a local snowmobile trail.  The ultimate goal will be to successfully teach attendees how to gather the correct information to fill-out the required Trail Log forms to be turned in to a Forester before any work can be performed on State lands.  Also, attendees will learn first-hand what the DEC and APA Snowmobile Trail Siting and Maintenance Guidelines document states as well as why trail work needs to follow these rules.  Additional training will be undertaken at a different time to fully train workers on snowmobile trail maintenance within "The Blue Line".

This class is open to anyone interested in working on ADK trails by pre-registering with Jim Rolf at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

NYSSA Endorses Zero Alcohol

Zero Alcohol

Riding Alcohol-Free is Your Smart Choice For Safer Snowmobiling

Pine Bush, New York – At the height of the snowmobile season, the New York State Snowmobile Association reminds riders that many snowmobile-related incidents would be prevented if every rider made the smart choice for Zero Alcohol. NYSSA endorses the Zero Alcohol program, which urges every snowmobiler to take personal responsibility for choosing to be 100% alcohol-free prior to and during any snowmobile ride.

The Zero Alcohol Campaign is delivering this clear and unequivocal message to snowmobilers across North America through the snowmobile publications they read, and the snowmobile television shows they watch as well as through the main stream media.  Zero Alcohol also encourages every snowmobiler to set an example to all riding companions to practice Zero Alcohol as part of their own regular safe riding habit.

“We are very confident that many snowmobilers have seen the Zero Alcohol message and that most are making the smart choice to ride alcohol-free,” said NYSSA President Gary Broderick. “Unfortunately, a few riders still don’t get it and our sympathies are with their loved ones who have to live with the tragic consequences. At this sad time, we strongly urge the families and friends of all snowmobilers to remind their loved ones to choose Zero Alcohol. ”

Although Zero Alcohol is not a legal requirement, the organized snowmobiling community points out that unlike driving an automobile on engineered roads, snowmobiling is an inherently risky, off road activity that occurs in a natural setting. Consequently, operating a snowmobile requires peak concentration and reactions at all times.  Even a small amount of alcohol can cause tragedy.  Studies show that impairment starts from the first drink and that a person with a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of .08% is 11 times more likely to get killed while driving a car than at the .00% BAC recommended by the Zero Alcohol Campaign.  Operating a snowmobile is even more challenging than driving a car so this recent tragedy reminds us once again that Zero Alcohol is your smart choice for safer snowmobiling.

Fifth Annual NYSSA Adirondack Trails Conference Held in Long Lake

Fifth Annual NYSSA Adirondack Trails

Conference Held in Long Lake

Officials from NYS Agencies, Snowmobile Clubs, and Local Municipalities Came Together to Improve Snowmobile Trails

LONG LAKE, NY – On Saturday, March 31st, the New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA) hosted their fifth annual Adirondack Trails Conference at The Adirondack Hotel in Long Lake. 40 representatives from organizations including NYSSA, DEC, APA, OPRHP and DOT along with local municipal and club officials came together to discuss why working positively with State Agency officials is so important to future partnerships and trails locations.

“This year’s Adirondack Trails Conference was another success for the sport of snowmobiling,” said Jim Rolf, Trail Coordinator of NYSSA. “By coming together in this forum, each group has a fair chance to discuss how we can make New York snowmobile trails in the Adirondacks the best they legally can be. Width of trails, signage, and location are all factors that were openly discussed with suggested reasoning given by attendees for cooperative work.”

Topics covered this year included: status of easements and recreational plans, identifying trails on the Forest Preserve that need work, reviewing upcoming UMP issues (trail designation and possible trail closures), history of the APA/DEC relationship, environmental damage from two tropical storms last fall, and the next steps with NYSSA’s Trails Steward program.

“This is our chance each year to bring together so many key decision makers in our sport of snowmobiling,” said Dominic Jacangelo, Executive Director of NYSSA. “In a season that featured below average snowfall, this year’s Adirondack Trails Conference was still highly productive for discussing snowmobiling in Adirondack Park.”

“With record low snowfalls this winter, businesses in upstate New York took a financial hit. Along the 10,500 miles of trails across New York State there are, convenient stores, gas pumps, and snowmobile parts, repair and sales dealerships that rely on snowmobilers as a significant source of revenue.” concluded NYSSA President Gary Broderick.

The New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA), a non-profit corporation, is the largest snowmobile association in the country working on behalf of the 135,000 registered NY snowmobile owners, who contribute approximately $1 billion to the New York economy, and 240 snowmobile clubs to improve trails, facilities and services for participants, and defend snowmobilers against discriminatory legislation.
